Materials

It has been observed that we are living in a world much different than our parents and much much different than the one our grandparents lived in. the ease at which we have slipped into this “disposable” world is more than a little disconcerting. Which makes it essential for us to consider the nature of the material in our lives. When considering materials for use in our work we focused on finding high quality, eco-friendly elements. It’s not just about printing on recycled paper anymore.

Renewable Materials: Bamboo, because it grows so fast and easily, is a wonderful renewable material and one we use for our flooring. We use sustainable harvested materials such as FSC certified wood.

Recycled Materials: We use countertops made with recycled paper and glass. We use tiles made from recycled glass and porcelain. We also use composite decking materials and recycled carpet tiles.

Long-Lasting and Low Maintenance: Materials such as weathering steel roofing and cement siding with integrated color never require repainting and are relatively maintenance free. They are strong and reliable materials with long lives.

Re-Use: When possible, we incorporate previously used materials into our houses. The majority of our houses are of an inner-city redevelopment nature. So, through the process of decommissioning the previous home, we recycle clean wood and drywall, as well as metals and fixtures. Re-use easily harvested materials like brick and stone. Some of the fixtures/ appliances can be refurbished and used back into the new house most are given to people less fortunate to upgrade their living environments.
