There are only few floor system options when constructing a new house. For years builders have used dimensional lumber for their floor joists and beams. However in the last decade or so, dimensional lumber as a floor system as been on a steady decline on favor of engineered floor systems, and recently steel truss and concrete floor systems have started to emerge as well.
Dimensional Lumber: Dimensional lumber is the conventional 2×4, 2×6 and 2×8 etc. This form of floor system is hardly ever used anymore due to the excessive waste of wood, it shrinkage potential (even at optimal moisture content), and the fact that we have fewer and fewer trees to choose from.
Engineered Floor Systems: Sometimes referred to as a wood “I” joists. These systems are lighter, use less wood, holes to facilitate plumbing, electrical, and heating runs can be cut in the webs. As well these systems can also span longer distances, further adding to the efficiency of the system. The engineered floor system also comes in an open web form that are a little more expensive but are also a little easier to work with for the framing crews. As well they are considerably more stable in the even of fire.
Hambro Floor System: Is a steel web truss system (approx. One truss every four feet) that can span distances upwards of 40 feet. The system also implores a re-usable (4’x8’ plywood) forming system. After the joists, formwork and rebar are placed, a 4” concrete floor is poured over the top of the steel trusses to create a highly rigid floor system.
This system is one that i find great value in, because it is installed once, but returns many benefits afterward. In addition to being a highly durable floor system, once finished it can also be a very attractive finished floor as well. As an alternative to putting down hardwood, as an example, this could save ten to fifteen dollars per square foot. As far as durability goes, it is about as durable as anything on the market. It also affords you the opportunity to efficiently use radiant at very little extra cost. And naturally provides thermal mass that can be used to store the suns heat during the day and return it to the living space at night.
If you are comfortable with a modern look for a flooring material this can be a very cost effective and durable choice for a floor/ flooring/ heating/ cooling system.
